Northern Kettle Moraine Nordic

About

Founded in 2004, the Northern Kettle Moraine Nordic Ski Team, based in East Central Wisconsin and is sponsored by the Northern Kettle Moraine Nordic Ski Club welcomes skiers in the 5th thru 12th grade.  Many skiers start without any skiing experience, yet practice by practice, the team comes together with a desire to ski proficiently, to stay in shape, to make friends with other skiers, and to have fun as a TEAM.

The NKMN Storm participates in approximately 10 competitive events each year including the Rhinelander Hodag Challenge, Wausau Badger State Games, Wisconsin Nordic Ski League (WNSL) Southern Conference and State Meets, the American Birkebeiner/Kortelopet and several other high school and middle school meets.  The team also schedules two December weekend Training Camps in Ironwood, Michigan, and a handful of ski practice weekends throughout the season in Northern Wisconsin and in the U.P.  The team also hosts the Greenbush Challenge Meet in either January or February.

The Storm practices mostly at the Kettle Moraine State Forest – Northern Unit located in Greenbush. The Greenbush Trails provide some of the finest Nordic skiing in the state, and introduces many area youth to the spirit and benefits of Nordic skiing as a life-long sport and community activity. The Greenbush Trails were the venue for the 1989 Wisconsin State High School Nordic Ski Championships.

Mission Statement: We come together to learn good classic and skate ski technique, stay in shape, compete as a team, learn how to wax, meet other skiers, and to have FUN!

Coaches

The Storm Team Family is mourning the loss of one of our dedicated Coaches and good friend, Terry Knier, 66, who passed away on January 7, 2024.  He, along with a number of Storm skiers were skiing and enjoying a Novice Biathlon event at Ariens Nordic Center when he collapsed.  Despite good efforts by many, he could not be revived. In the end, he was doing what he enjoyed the most – skiing and sharing his knowledge and love of the sport with young people.  Coach Terry has been one of the original coaches of the Storm Team program, which celebrates its 20-year anniversary this year.

We are very fortunate and grateful that Coach Terry was in our lives!
